Two New Films on Double Bill
Unparalleled and Detours

Video Clip Two new homegrown movies have emerged from ski filmmakers with different stories to tell.

Unparalleled is the debut film of Tahoe-based filmmaker Josh "Bones" Murphy and explores the long journey from the roots of telemark skiing to its current cutting edge status. The movie combines historic footage with modern shots providing the viewer a unique perspective of the sport's evolution.

"Telemark means so many different things to so many different people. I wanted to show the cutting edge while still touching base with the soul of the sport," Murphy says.

Given the pathetic equipment, the old shots almost look more extreme than the modern day ones.

The vintage footage is priceless: black and white shots of skiers tearing it up on wooden skis; women hiking in wool skirts; and, guys jumping cornices on skis with no edges. Given the pathetic equipment, the old shots almost look more extreme than the modern day ones. But if it's about the passion they exude, the archival images might as well be of plastic-boot-wearing-fat-ski-and-twin-tip telemarkers. New school segments include big-mountain skiing, inverts, 720s, switch landings and much more.

Unparalleled was filmed in various locations, including the fjords of Norway, California's Sierra Nevada, and the peaks of Canada's rugged Coast Range.

And Murphy searched for just the right music to represent all facets of free-heel skiing, with music from bands like Wise Monkey Orchestra and Brand New Heavies. Featured skiers include Heather Paul, Luke Miller and Scott Murray from the US, Norway's Frode Gronvold and Sweden's Oscar Tjarnberg.

Detours is the second flick from Soulstice Films »
