A rough and tumble course at Schladming sent Bode Miller for a loop, and he lost a valuable opportunity to retake the points lead from Stephan Eberharter. Kalle Palander won his second straight slalom.

They'll be running on the Streif downhill course for the 63rd year, plus a slalom, combined calculation and a Super-G. The snow will be flying all weekend as the World Cup hits Austria.

With warm and dry conditions across much of Europe, the women's events originally scheduled for Berchtesgaden were rescheduled at Bormio. Janica Kostelic celebrated her 21st birthday with a big weekend on the slopes.

Conditions were icy, hard and FAST at the Chevy Birds of Prey events at Beaver Creek. Stephan Eberhart continued to show his dominance on Saturday, Didier Cuche got a win on Sunday, and the Americans had an historic finish.

Germany's Hilde Gerg captured the season-opening women's downhill at Lake Louise but was injured Saturday and may be out for the season. A difficult course and icy conditions saw many crashes over the weekend, including one that sent American Lindsay Kildow to the hospital.

Downhiller Chad Fleischer said Friday his Halloween "treat" was getting back on skis. He took 10 testing runs in his first time on skis since he severely injured his right knee in a crash during World Cup training in January.

US Olympic silver medallist Bode Miller started the World Cup season with another do-or-die routine Sunday, surviving a lost pole in his first giant slalom run and a near-spill in his second. And in the women's giant slalom, a first ever on the World Cup, a three-way tie for 1st.
