Renate Goetschl of Austria, skiing on a mountain where she's had a good deal of success, gained her first victory since being injured nearly a year ago. Goetschl won the second Super-G of the week in a time of 1:16.95, .26 ahead of teammate Alexandra Meissnitzer. Melanie Turgeon of Canada finished 3rd.
World Cup points leader Janica Kostelic of Croatia wound up in fifth place, with a time of 1:17.61. For the U.S., Jonna Mendes had her first-ever top 10 in a Super-G, finishing 8th in 1:17.77.
Three other Americans joined Mendes in among the top 17 finishers. Caroline Lalive tied for 11th, Kirsten Clark was 14th and Julia Mancuso finished 17th.
"We've got to find another five- or six-tenths," said DH/SG Head Coach Jim Tracy. "The girls did a good job – it's the best super G for Jonna and Caroline was fourth through the middle part where it's turny and technical. But we lost it again on the bottom where it's flat.
"I'm pleased in a lot of ways. We've been consistent, for sure, but we've got to find those five- or six-tenths and then we'll really be in there."
Goetschl finished 2nd in the Super-G here on Wednesday. A year ago, she won the downhill and was second in the Super-G at Cortina, so she clearly likes the setting. The victory was the 23rd of her cup career, and first since she broke her leg in a crash last March at Lenzerheide.
The women race downhill Saturday and complete the visit to Cortina, the 1956 Olympic host, with a giant slalom Sunday.
