Homestanding Michaela Dorfmeister of Austria won the downhill today at Innsbruck in a time of 1:31.51, .45 seconds ahead of teammate Katja Wirth, who surprised with her second place finish. The final spot on the podium went to Hilde Gerg of Germany, who finished in 1:32.05. Renate Goetschl of Austria, the winner of yesterday's Super-G, wsa fourth.
U.S. skier Caroline Lalive was injured in a crash at the finish line and taken to a local hospital. The U.S. Ski team has not released details on her condition, but the Associated Press reported that she suffered either torn ligaments in her right knee or a broken leg.
Dorfmeister's win is her XX of the year and 16th of her career. She moves into the lead in the downhill points standings with only the season finale at Lillehammer remaining.
Julia Mancuso was the highest American finisher, 11th in a time of 1:32.88. Jonna Mendes was 18th, Kirsten Clark 20th, Alison Powers 23rd, Lalive 24th despite her injury, Lindsey Kildow 28th and Libby Ludlow 36th.
For Clark, the finish was a disappointment, as she had hoped to make a run to the top of the discipline standins at the end of an excellent year. She slipped to fourth in the rankings with 256 points, 76 behind Dorfmeister.
The women complete their speed weekend tomorrow with another Super-G.
