Bode Seeks Lead, Von Gruenigen Seeks Grand Finale
Shiga Kogen, Japan — March 6, 2003

Two weeks to go. One of the most memorable World Cup seasons in years is winding toward the finish line next week in Lillehammer, Norway. First up, however, are two technical races this weekend in Japan that most expect will draw the overall points race even closer than it already is, and may provide a fitting send-off to one of the greatest copmetitors in skiing history.

Michael Von Gruenigen is in the final two weeks of his competitive career. The Swiss master is looking to go out on top. Coming off his third GS victory of the year at Yongpyong, South Korea last week, Von Gruenigen holds a 97 point lead in the discipline standings over FIS GS World Champ Bode Miller. A victory this week would clinch the title. But the margin is slim, and Miller still holds hope of winning the cup.

Of course, Miller has his sights set on an even bigger prize: the overall points championship. Last week he cut Austrian Stephan Eberharter's lead in half, from 185 points to 93.

The races this weekend are in Miller's specialties, the technical disciplines. But Eberharter is here to try to claim some points and maintain his lead. Should the scene in Japan follow last week's script, the two dominant racers of the season may head to next week's season-ender in Lillehammer virtually even.

MountainZone.com will have all the action right through the end of the season, so stay with us to see if Bode Miller can bring the U.S. team its first overall champion since Phil Mahre in 1983.
