Kostelic Wins 2nd Gold
St. Moritz, Switzerland — February 15, 2003
RESULTS

Runaway World Cup leader Janica Kostelic of Croatia powered her way through two nearly flawless runs Saturday to pickup her second gold medal at the 2003 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships by winning the women's slalom by .63 over Marlies Schild of Austria. Teenager Resi Stiegler, the lone American who didn't fall in the first run, was 19th.

Kostelic, who was gold medalist in the women's combined, had a two-run time of 1:39.55 with Schild taking silver in 1:40.18. The bronze medalist was Nicole Hosp, another Austrian who was silver medalist in combined.

Stiegler, 17, the 10th-place finisher in combined, was 19th in the first run and finished in 1:42.37. Kristina Koznick fell in the first run, hiked two gates and came down 40 seconds behind Kostelic, then decided not to ski in the final run. Sarah Schleper and Julia Mancuso were DNF-1.

"I think I was tired," Stiegler said after her final run. Her 11th place finish in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, shortly before Christmas helped earn her World Championships spot. "I had a long two weeks of training and it's just my first World Championships. I'm happy with what I did...

"I wish I could have done better for our team, but...I'm happy for finishing."

With its two medals today, Austria now has an insurmountable lead in the overall medals race against the United States. Austria has won nine medals to the U.S.' six thus far, with only the men's slalom remaining tomorrow.
