Didier Defago of Switzerland claimed his first-ever World Cup win today, taking the Super-G at Val Gardena in a time of 1:38.11. Hannes Reichelt of Austria was second, 11/100ths of a second behind, while Marco Buechel of Liechtenstein finished third.
Bode Miller led three Americans into the top 20, finishing 6th in a time of 1:38.76. Marco Sullivan wound up 15th and Jake Fiala 20th. Defending Super-G champion Daron Rahlves was 27th. World Cup points leader Stephan Eberharter did not compete following his injury last week at Val d'Isere.
Sullivan and Fiala's finishes were notable, given that both started well outside the top 30. Sullivan was the 45th competitor on the course, while Fiala started all the way back in 62nd position. Indeed, three of the top six finishers came from outside the top 30, rendering moot the new FIS qualification scheme, for one day at least.
The event at Val Gardena continues tomorrow with the Downhill.
