Wengen Downhill II
Wengen, Switzerland — January 18, 2003
RESULTS

Bruno Kernan won the Wengen Downhill II in his home country Saturday in a time of 2:28.69. It was Kernan's first World Cup victory since 1996. Michael Walchhofer was second in 2:28.92, while Austrian teammate and World Cup leader Stephan Eberharter finished third in 2:29.14.

For the U.S., Daron Rahlves dealt with some bad luck before finishing 8th, Bode Miller was 11th and Marco Sullivan 15th. Further back in the pack were Scott McCartney in 34th, Jake Fiala, 37th and Bryon Friedman, 38th.

Hermann Maier continued his comeback, and the story is beginning to look pretty amazing. Maier finished 7th in just his third race since coming back. This week, he has gone from failing to qualify for second run of the slalom at Adelboden to 22nd in the downhill Friday to a top 10 today. Not bad after more than a year and a half away due to injury.

For Rahlves, who finished 2nd in Friday's downhill, the day was especially frustrating. Midway through the longest course on the Cup circuit, he was stopped after a crash in front of him. He was returned to the top of the hill and had to run again, clearly not an optimal situation. All in all, his 8th place finish was pretty solid.

Maier's amazing comeback produced a top-10 finish in just his 3rd race back from the injury.

Eberharter's second podium in as many days will extend his overall points lead, but Miller figures to pick up points in Sunday's slalom, an discipline in which Eberharter rarely skies.
