Goetschl Nabs 2nd Super G
Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy — January 16, 2004

Austrian Renate Goetschl won her fourth World Cup race of the season Friday, capturing a super G on the second of four race days in Cortina. Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) was ninth, Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) 12th and Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA) 16th as five U.S. women broke into the top 30.

It's the 31st win of her career for Goetschl, who closed to within 72 points of World Cup leader Anja Paerson of Sweden, 781-709. Her winning time was 1:10.59 with German Martina Ertl second in 1:10.92 and teammate Hilde Gerg third (1:11.02).

Clark, who is ninth in the overall standings, was timed in 1:11.58. Lalive's time was 1:12.17 and Ludlow, continuing her rebound from an ankle injury in October, was 16th in 1:12.28 for her third top-20 in the last four speed races.

In addition, Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) was 28th and Jonna Mendes (Heavenly, CA) 29th.

"The snow is perfect and things are so tight, and you can't afford even little mistakes," said U.S. Head Coach Patrick Riml. "It's okay, five girls in the first 30 - okay.

"It was a really good result again for Libby - she's really stepping up. 'Liner' [Lalive] lost a second on the top for some reason - we're going to analyze that one closely - and then skied very good through the middle and bottom, but you can't lose that kind of time and make it up against this field, and Kirsten had such a little mistake at the top, skied so well in the middle and then another small mistake at the bottom.

"It's all positive and we're so close - but we can't afford those little mistakes," Riml said.
