Goetschle Too Hot in Super G
Lake Louise, Alberta — December 7, 2003

Austrian Renate Goetschl collected the 28th win of her career Sunday, capturing a super G at Lake Louise by a half-second over teammate (and reigning super G world champion) Michaela Dorfmeister. Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) finished just out of the top three - in fourth place, leading three Americans into the top 20.

Goetschl won for the fourth time at Lake Louise, this time in 1:14.98. Dorfmeister was second at 1:15.49 and Clark, who was third Friday in the first of two downhills in the Canadian Rockies, finished in 1:15.85.

"Conditions were perfect with hard snow. Clarky was fast on the top," DH/SG Head Coach Alex Hoedelmoser said, "and also fast again at the bottom, but she made a little mistake in the midsection and that kept her off the podium.

"She had a good series here again. She's right on track, for sure." A year ago, Clark was third, fourth and fifth in two DHs and a super G.

Elsewhere, Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO), continuing her succcessful rebound from torn knee ligaments last March 1 in a World Cup downhill crash in Austria, was 15th and Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) finished 20th.

"'Liner' [Lalive] should have been in there with Clarky," Hoedelmoser said. "She was fast on the top, too, where it was technical, but she made a mistake coming onto the flats - or she'd have been there with Kirsten. And Mancuso skied fast on the top, too, but was losing seconds on the bottom."

He added, "It takes a lot of effort because there's such a strong field and these other teams have young ones coming up, too, and our girls have to prove it, prove they can ski here. Our young ones have the same talent, they can do as wellÉbut they have to prove it. Today, they didn't."

The U.S. women return to Europe this week and will train in Austria and join with the tech team, which has seen its World Cup races in Slovakia and the Czech Republic canceled because of poor snow conditions.
