US' Kildow Rips to 2nd in Super G
Cortina D'Ampezzo — January 14, 2004

Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) posted a second-place finish Friday, just .08 away from victory in a World Cup super G as she led five U.S. women into the top 20, including Jonna Mendes (Heavenly, CA) who tore out of the 47th start to finish 15th.

Austrian Renate Goetschl, who won Wednesday's SG in Cortina, was timed in 1:13.98 and took the World Cup leader in super G points while Kildow - fourth two days earlier - was second at 1:14.06. They also are 1-2 in the World Cup super G standings; Kildow is the downhill leader.

On a gnarly course that claimed 17 skiers, who did not finish, other top Americans included Julia Mancuso (Olympic Valley, CA) 13th, Mendes 15th, Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) 16th and Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) 20th.

It was Kildow's third podium of the season in SG; she also has two in downhill, including a win in the opening DH of the season at Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies.

"I made a big mistake on the top," she said. "I don't know what happened, maybe I pressured too hard, but I got high-sided [pitched up] and made a chuck turn [with her skis jammed sideways to slow herself]. I was 12th on the top, and after that I was so mad at myself I charged as hard as I could and tried to make up some time. I guess it went pretty well.

"I wanted to win, I wanted to get the red [leader's] bib, but considering my mistakes, I'm still happy." The string of podiums in DH and super G aren't generating any additional pressure heading into the World Championships, she said. "I'm just going one day at a time, one goal at a time. I think people will look at me for the World Championships, but I try not to think about it. I put enough pressure on myself, trying to get on top of the super G and downhill standings and the overall. Worlds won't necessarily be more than normal.

"I'm skiing well at this point," Kildow added, "so when I go to World Championships, it won't be anything unusual. All that's kind of usual now."

As the World Cup scheduled heads into its final 10 days before the World Championships get underway Jan. 19 in Bormio, Italy, the women race downhill for the next two days in Cortina. Then there's a night slalom Jan. 20 in Zagreb - the first World Cup race in Croatia - and the traditional GS/SL visit Jan. 22-23 to Maribor, Slovenia.
