Austrians Sweep Super G
Val Gardena, Italy — December 17, 2004

Bode Miller (Franconia, NH) finished fourth Friday in a super G while Michael Walchhofer led Austrians into the top three places. Daron Rahlves (Sugar Bowl, CA) tied for 13th over the 2.4K course.

Walchhofer's first super G win came in a time of 1:31.17 with Hermann Maier second and Benjamin Raich third. Miller, the runaway World Cup leader through 11 races, finished in 1:31.86 and Rahlves' time was 1:32.54.

In addition, Bryon Friedman (Park City, UT) was 27th with a re-start after he was waved off-course following a crash by Australian AJ Bear. Scott Macartney (Redmond, WA), who missed most of last season with knee problems, earned his first World Cup points in two years, finishing 30th in the 30-degree weather. "We were looking for a little better result but four in the points is pretty good. 'Freedog' and Scotty Mac, coming out of the cheap seats - and Freedog with a re-start - was pretty good," said speed Head Coach John McBride.

"Conditions were really good and Bode skied a good run down through me [where McBride was on course] but apparently had some small problems at the bottom that cost him. And I thought I'd see a little more fire from 'D' [Rahlves] but he was a half-second out at the top and that was it...but tomorrow's another day. We get another swing at this hill in downhill, so we'll see what that brings."

Friday was the first day of a five-races-in-six-days stretch. The men have a downhill Saturday in Val Gardena and the traditional giant slalom Sunday in Alta Badia. Tuesday and Wednesday, they race GS and slalom in Flachau, Austria.

Miller leads the World Cup with 780 points, followed by Maier with 419, Walchhofer with 384 and Raich at 376.
