Kildow, Lalive Top-10 in DH #2
Lake Louise, Alberta — December 4, 2004

A day after her first victory, Lindsey Kildow (Vail, CO) churned through gnarly conditions and finished fifth Saturday in a World Cup downhill, leading four U.S. women into top-20 finishes while Germany's Hilde Gerg earned the 19th win of her career.

Gerg finished in 1:36.01 with Renate Goetschl of Austria second at 1:36.16. Kildow, who nailed the course Friday in the first downhill, finished in 1:36.27 with Caroline Lalive (Steamboat Springs, CO) ninth for the second day in a row.

Other top-30 points scorers for the U.S. Ski Team were: Bryna McCarty (Concord, VT) in 13th place, Kirsten Clark (Raymond, ME) in 20th and Jonna mendes (Heavenly, CA) in a tie for 29th.

"We had about 10 centimeter [four inches] of snow during the night," U.S. DH/SG Head Coach Alex Hoedlmoser reported, "and the race crews worked hard and cleared just about everything, so we were down to the hard stuff. The flats still had some soft stuff but they did a really good job clearing things."

Kildow, he said, laid down another superb run. "She was really fast and solid and with a little bit of luck Lindsey would have done it again. I mean, only .26 away from a win...and she lost it at the top. She out-skied everyone in the technical middle section again and then had just a little mistake on the bottom...so she could have done it again.

"And 'Liner' [Lalive] skied really well again. That's two top-10s in two days and she should have good confidence for the super G [Sunday]," he said. "Bryna had a problem on the top, which normally a good section for a glider like her but it had some of that soft snow, but she skied so well in the technical section in the middle of the race, and I was very pleased to see that."

In addition to the predawn snow, there was fog blowing in and out of the course, Hoedlmoser said. "There was no wind but the fog caught some racer. In general, I'd have to say it was solid sh---y conditions for everybody," he laughed.

Libby Ludlow (Bellevue, WA), who crashed Friday in the first downhill, did not race, but Hoedlmoser said she hoped to run the super G Saturday despite some ankle pain.
