Joe Hartney
Joe Hartney has been skiing for 14 of his 25 years. After learning to ski on a tiny hill in Wisconsin, he moved west in search of wilderness. This search initially took him to Colorado for four years of college where he began backcountry skiing and rock climbing.

With a dangerously unpredictable snowpack and severely developed ski terrain, Joe spent more time climbing rock and ice than skiing. In 1997, he moved to Jackson, Wyoming, to further pursue his mountain education. Under the tutelage of veteran Greater Yellowstone explorer Tom Turiano, Joe quickly realized that the area offered endless skiing potential with a more predictable snowpack than Colorado. He has been able to climb and ski more than 40 peaks throughout the Yellowstone region.

During the short Wyoming summers, he has continued to climb, but now spends most of the year on skis. Joe works part time as a ski instructor at Jackson Hole, devoting the majority of his free time to exploring Greater Yellowstone.
